4-25&26-02, "Insight's Aboriginal Oil & Gas Ventures" conference will convened April 25-26 in Edmonton, featuring a program of interest to companies, regulatory agencies, government policy makers and Aboriginal leaders. Ameera Khoja (NGP Photo) coordinated this successful event. Access Agenda & Registration Material here.
Jerome N. Slavik (NGP Photo), Partner with Ackroyd, Piasta, Roth & Day LLP, chaired the two day program and provided significant legal counsel to participants. In opening the meeting, he said, "The concerns and interests of Aboriginal people have to be observed in the development of oil and gas resources. In addition to Federal and provincial governments," he said, "First Nations governments are devoting significant time, energy and resources to oil and gas development." ...
During a noon hour presentation, Honorable Pearl Calahasen, Alberta’s Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, challenged First Nations, the oil industry and government to be “creative, innovative and to think outside the box. We believe in people and in free enterprise.” About 165,000 Aboriginals live in Alberta, half of whom are children, she said. To fully develop the youth, her administration is working on a variety of initiatives and distributed her ministry’s ‘business plan’, “The Government of Alberta’s Aboriginal Policy Framework.” She said to conferees, “we are seeking a better tomorrow by building partnerships and joint ventures today.” To reach the goals, she urged greater understanding saying, “Significance of the land is the very essence of our being…. For partnerships and joint ventures to work, this must be understood…. Aboriginal peoples must benefit from Alberta’s economic opportunities…. Parties need to come together to resolve issues or the activist courts will determine policy….” She added, “I’m proud of the oil and gas industry as it leads by example. Stay the course,” she advised, “look to new joint ventures and do the right thing.”
